, is based on the book, Made In China. Suzanne originally developed the presentation, for the Pacific Science Center in Seattle – their requirements were – heavy on science and very hands on. Since then she has honed the material in dozens of schools. The presentation includes a 40-45 minute interactive presentation for students 3rd grade and above, ideally for 60 – 110 students at a time. Alternately she meets with younger students, up to 40 at a time, for 20-30 minutes presentations based on Chinese legends that pertain to the book. For schools that want a real hands on experience, she sets up stations for 28 – 35 students at a time. Each station includes an experiment or activity having to do with Chinese inventions. Using a rotating schedule, several classes (4th grade and up please) can participate in an afternoon. Suzanne works with you, to put together the components for a memorable kick-off or follow -up to your unit on China, or for a celebration of a Chinese holiday! Click for a sample lesson. A teacher guide is also available. Reviews of Chinese Invention Presentation. |

developed Celebrating Los Días de Los Muertos with Sierra Arts Foundation in Reno, Nevada. She’s given this workshop to numerous teachers groups and Sierra Arts Foundation sent her to dozens of classrooms to refine the lessons. This workshop begins with a review of the origins of Los Días de Los Muertos, and then Suzanne takes teachers through the steps of creating several classroom art projects for the celebration. She discusses ways to bring this cultural view of death into your class in a meaningful, respectful, yet joyous way. The workshop includes a 30 page booklet with instructions for art and writing lessons, as well as lessons incorporating math, science, reading, and social studies. Teachers from grade levels, pre-school through high school Spanish instructors give rave reviews to this workshop. Click for a sample lesson. |

, Short Biographies is under development with Nevada Hispanic Services. The project includes curriculum materials based on reading standards at grade levels 1st – 8th. Each grades’ material includes short, illustrated biographies of two to four Great Latinos, suggestions for lessons and follow up, resources list, and in some cases, pre-designed worksheets. We will post here when the material is ready for distribution. Teachers, send Suzanne an e-mail to ask to be notified when the Great Latino material is available. In the meantime, Suzanne is developing a teacher workshop based on the lives of Great Latinos. If your school is within 100 miles of Reno, Nevada and is interested in participating in the workshop development. Contact Suzanne. |

Suzanne will gladly consider invitations to student Career Days or to give presentations based on writing. She has traveled to the Canadian Arctic three times while working on her book, The Inuit. She loved writing Nevada because she lives there. And she has visited an Ojibwe Reserve in Southern Ontario while developing projects with folks there. Suzanne has power point photos of her research trips, stories of meeting with native elders, tales from Nevada, etc. She has worked as a free lance editor as well as a writer, and often does her own photo/illustration research, so she knows the book creation process well.
Or, Suzanne can take your class through writing exercises, based on her creative writing workshops for students. She can meet with your teachers, giving them a hands-on introduction to using her writing rules and prompts.– tools that she finds elicit heartfelt writing and real enthusiasm from students. But, the best presentations about writing, research, and multi-culturalism will be designed for your schools’ specific needs. Contact Suzanne. |
